Having grown up in England, living in Panama City Beach is sometimes like living on vacation. The skies are blue, the sun is shining, and the beaches are spectacular. In England, the skies are nearly always gray, the sun really doesn’t shine very often, and the beaches….well, let’s just say that they don’t have quite the same tropical feel. Of course England is an incredible country, rich with history and culture, and I am proud to call it home. And in all fairness, some of its beaches are nothing short of breathtaking. Here is a humorous account of the differences between a tropical beach vacation here in Panama City Beach, and a beach “holiday” in good old Blighty.

In Panama City Beach (hereby referred to as PCB) the sands are soft and almost snow-white, complemented by a crystal-clear, emerald green and blue sea. These beaches could be straight from a postcard – they are truly beautiful, rivaling any in the Caribbean. Across the Atlantic in England, there are both sandy and pebbled beaches. The sandy beaches consist of yellow grainy textured sand, and the pebbled beaches are basically an expanse of large stones. Great for skimming on the water, painful beyond measure for a barefoot walk or for laying out on a beach towel. Given a choice, I’ll take the sandy bottom any day.

A summer’s day on the beach in PCB will typically be hot and sticky – jumping in the ocean is a great way to cool off and beat the heat. You can sit under an umbrella for shade, and head back to some air-conditioning if the temperatures are sizzling. In England, you can still sit under the umbrella, but it will be to shelter you from the elements. (namely wind, rain or hail) Think it’s tough to keep your beach towel spread out on the beach in PCB? Try doing it in near gale-force winds. A wind-break is a necessary item to pack along with your flip flops, sweaters, and perhaps even a jacket or two.

There’s nothing like a postcard to make the folks back home jealous and to illustrate the fabulous time you are having on your beach getaway. A PCB postcard will typically show a stunning view of the beach, perhaps some palm trees swaying in the breeze, and a glorious sunset on the horizon. An English beach postcard is a very different story. There are normally a couple of larger ladies wearing knickerbockers or a very questionable one-piece, sitting in their stripy deckchairs and eating either fish and chips in newspaper or a stick of rock. The ladies will be smiling but you can tell they are freezing cold and wishing they were warm at home instead. What are knickerbockers and sticks of rock you may ask? I could explain, but I don’t have nearly enough space to explain the complexities of our “common” language!

Vacationers to PCB will, for the most part, enjoy comfortable and spacious accommodations with gorgeous views of the sparkling Gulf of Mexico. Hotels or condominiums offer all the comforts of home including cable TV, DVD, washer & dryer, sometimes a full kitchen, and usually a private balcony. Head east about 4000 miles and you will probably find yourself in a B&B (that’s Bed and Breakfast) sharing a bathroom with ten other people and having to check before taking a bath in case the water isn’t hot enough. Of course that is mildly exaggerated, but believe me…..many B&B’s still offer shared bathrooms and they will nearly all run out of hot water at some point! The B&B is a traditional English guest house and is basically a room in someone’s home complete with a greasy fry-up in the morning. The décor usually looks like time stood still somewhere around 1936, and the amenities are basically just a tea kettle, a bed, and a lamp for reading. Plus, if you’re really lucky, you may get a TV with a whopping 4 channels to choose from.

One of the absolute best things about a PCB vacation is the fabulous array of cuisine to tempt your palate, and the sensational variety of restaurants that are available. Here’s what a typical menu for the day could look like:

Breakfast: Fresh seasonal fruit, grits, eggs any way you want ‘em, pancakes and coffee.

Lunch: Grilled grouper sandwich, fresh tuna dip and a colorful salad.

Dinner: Fresh seafood platter with shrimp, lobster, clams, oysters, fish and crab. Key lime pie for desert. Hungry yet? Here’s what might be served up in Tea-and-Crumpetville Beach:

Breakfast: A traditional fry-up. Eggs, bacon, sausages, fried toast, tomatoes, baked beans and blood pudding. Yes, I really did say baked beans and blood pudding. Plus a cup of hot tea with milk to kick start the day.

Lunch: Steak and kidney pie, chips (that’s French fries) mushy peas and gravy. If the kidney puts you off, perhaps try some fish & chips wrapped in newspaper. It really does make it taste better.

Dinner: Bangers (sausages) with either mash or jacket (baked) potato. Probably mushy peas again. And a big old bowl of spotted dick and custard for dessert. Yum.

Now I’m not suggesting for one minute that an English beach vacation is something to be avoided at all costs. Quite the contrary. It’s actually a divine experience, made all the better by the quirky traditions and unpredictable weather. I believe England is one of the world’s finest destinations and I know that any visitor would absolutely love it, blood pudding and all. Panama City Beach is, in my opinion, another of the world’s greatest vacation destinations and has its own unique qualities that set it apart from the rest. If you’re lucky enough to get to travel across the Atlantic – you’re going to love it. For those vacationing stateside and heading to Panama City Beach – you are in for a sunny, sandy, southern treat. Just leave the jackets and wind-breaks at home and think twice before ordering grits.

No matter what new bar opens, or what spot becomes a summer trend, Newby’s, for lots of PCB locals, is like home. What began as a liquor store has, over the years, transformed into PCB’s #1 good-times tavern. Bikers, breakers and locals all hanging out under one roof, that’s Ms. Newby’s.

RockIt Lanes is located at 513 Beckrich Rd Panama City Bch, FL 32407. Call Ahead at (850) 249-2695

If you walk into J. Micheal’s you’re likely to see city officials, hotel GMs and even restaurant owners hanging out in the same place they’ve been frequenting for years. Although the location has changed, the great food and chilled atmosphere has not. If you’re in PCB, you have to go to J. Micheal’s and order the red beans and rice; it’s a world famous dish that can tell you all you need to know about PCB in one bite.

I can’t give away all those locations, but one of the most popular of those locations is S. Rick Seltzer Park. This 4.7 acre cut of gulf is absolutely impeccable, one of the best places to get your “tan on”. With lots of restaurants and shopping nearby, and no high-rises on either side, you really feel like you have the whole beach to yourself. So grab a swimsuit, a bite to eat and just lounge like the locals do.

S. Rick Seltzer Park is located at 7419 Thomas Drive

4. Pineapple Willy’s Pier Bar

Pineapple Willy’s Pier Bar is the season/off-season locals hangout simple because you get great food, live music, awesome drinks and sports on 360 degrees worth of HDTV. While tourists spend their time in the adjacent Pineapple Willy’s restaurant, locals are kicking back with a Fat Tuesday drink, listening to a great band rip the stage all the while watching their favorite sports team kick some butt. It’s the life, and it’s why we’re locals.

Pineapple Willy’s Pier Bar is located at 9875 S Thomas Dr Panama City, FL 32408

3. Mr. Surf’s Surf Shop

If you were to go into Mr. Surf’s Surf Shop, you’ll know you’re in a PCB landmark the moment you see the wall of fame. Years of PCB residents and tourists are plastered on the wall, images of boys buying their first board only to, years later, take a photo with their son and his first board. Serving up the surf since 1980, Mr. Surf’s is the local stop for all things beach from surf and skim lessons to boards and bikinis. Surf’s is more than just a store.

When locals want to get out and party and don’t want to be mobbed by the crowds, they head to one spot and that’s Spinnaker’s Beach Club. During the day it’s an amazing restaurant, serving up treats at the Paradise Grill or the beachside Cantina taco & tequila bar. At night it transforms into one of the most exciting club experiences in NW Florida. The Groove Room, The VIP Lounge and the Rock Arena provide enough room to get your dance on all night long.

Over a relatively short period of time, Liza’s Kitchen has become Panama City Beach local’s favorite place. This eccentric gourmet sandwich spot on Panama City Beach makes the most original and tasty sandwiches on the entire beach. Everything is homemade down to the mayonnaise and everyday the delicious foccacia bread is freshly made.
There are all sorts of ways to enjoy a Panama City Beach-side lunch without spending loads of money. Here are 10 essentials to helping you skip the concession stand and pack a picnic to enjoy in the sand.

10 Necessities for the Perfect Beach Lunch

1. Themed Snacks
Incorporate ocean-inspired munchies like Goldfish and Shark Bite fruit snacks to create a fun beach-themed lunch your kids will love.

2. Apples
This fiber-rich snack will sustain you through the sandy ride home. And with no messy peel, the portable fruit is perfect for outdoor eating.

3. Baby Wipes
Washing sticky hands in the salty ocean doesn’t always get the job done. These do.

4. Refreshments
Don’t buy sugary sodas. Make your own lemonade or iced tea at home for a thirst-quenching refresher. Freeze bottles of water or juice boxes and enjoy them ice-cold once they thaw mid-day.

5. Crowd-Pleasing Sandwiches
Make a variety of sandwiches of favorite deli meats and cheeses using wraps or pita pockets for easy handling.

6. Crumb-Control Baggies
Pack sandwiches or loose snack foods in zipper-shut baggies, rather than those that fold over. Your cooler will remain crumb-free, and your food dry and fresh.

7. Reusable Utensils
Save money and the environment with utensils you won’t throw away. Try bamboo or hard plastic forks and knives, or pack old silverware from home.

8. Plastic Shopping Bags
Reuse plastic shopping bags, and let them help eliminate accidental beach litter by collecting your beach trash, wrappers, and bottles.

9. A Smarter Cooler
Beach chairs are already slung over your shoulders, and your arms are busy carrying the blanket. Avoid frustration (or an extra trip to the car) and bring a cooler with backpack-style straps to keep your hands free.

10. Tablecloth
Skip the beach blanket — when it’s time to eat, round up the family and keep food sand-free on a sheet or tablecloth. This lightweight alternative can be easily washed when something spills and folds up small for easy packing.

You can have your cake and eat it too! ‘er caffeine, that is. Joey’s made it to number one because of the cool coffee shop atmosphere, reasonable prices on food and beverages and beverage selection that includes items other than coffee. Starbucks is out for those that don’t drink coffee products but still want our caffeine. Sorry Starbucks. Plus, you don’t need any pesky login info or password to access their Wi-Fi.

Joey’s Java Juice is located on Back Beach Road in the same plaza as Jin Jin and Firehouse Subs just west of R Jackson Blvd (Beckrich).

Fatty’s Sandwich Shop

Great food, fun atmosphere and super sweet location. Fatty’s has, hands-down, the best sandwiches I have yet to eat in Panama City Beach. In addition to the two computers paying patrons can use, you can munch and hook up to their Wi-Fi if you come packin’ a laptop.

Fatty’s Sandwich Shop is located in the bottom right of the Calypso Beach Towers parking garage. Calypso Towers are the orange buildings you can see from Pier Park.

Pier Park

Of course, we can’t leave out Pier Park! Pier Park is the greatest shopping and dining “thing” to come to Panama City Beach – and the whole place is unwired. Now, we all love Pier Park, but the reason they aren’t up higher is because they limit the bandwidth and speed of those connected. Understandable, but still frustrating. However, you can’t beat coming out and hooking up!

Roy’s Burger and Fries

You looking for that perfect local burger joint? Well, look no further. Roy’s has got it all – either grilled or steamed burgers, 100% all beef hot dogs, and toppings to no end. And, the most important thing for us geeks and nerds? Roy’s Burgers and Fries has Wi-Fi. So, grab your laptop and go get a burger, fries and soda.

Roy’s Burgers and Fries is located in the Edgewater Shopping Plazza at Front Beach Road and R Jackson Blvd (Bechrich), to the north of the bowling alley.

Lords Gym

Well, I don’t know why you’d want to get your surf on while getting your work-out on, but if you do, this is the place to do it. Of course, being a mobile addict, this comes in real handy as I can keep the emails coming and mobile surfing up to speed regardless of having cellular service. Of course, I should probably stop working long enough to work out – doh!

Lord’s Gym is located off Allison, in between Front Beach Road and Back Beach Road.

Be on the look out for the Top 5 award!

Happy Father’s Day

1. Kayak Fishing
What is it?
Lots of fathers love the thrill of fishing. Just as many fathers enjoy the freedom of kayaking. So what do you get when you put the two together? You get one of the coolest father’s day ideas of all time: Kayak Fishing. Kayak Fishing is exactly as the name implies, fishing from a kayak. Kayak fisherman fish from sea kayaks in to level the playing field with fish. Kayaks are stealthy and allow anglers to reach areas not fishable from land or by conventional boat, thus you get to go where all the fish are and no competition from other fishermen.

Why Father’s will love it?
Father’s get to hit the sea and catch mammoth redfish and snapper just along the coast of Panama City Beach. It’s quiet, relaxing and at the same time exciting. And what father doesn’t like quiet, relaxation and excitement all at once?

Where to find it?
On Panama City Beach, the best place to get your kayak fishing on is at Sunjammers Watersports, the one place that can hook you up with all the best gear, tell you where to catch the best fish, teach you how its done and, if you show some skill, even let you in on their special Kayak Fishing Club. You can call 1-866-SUN-JAMM ask for Brad or check out the website at http://www.sunjammers.com.

2. Deep Sea Fishing

What is it?
Has your father ever dreamed of catching a fish as big as he is tall? Well, he doesn’t have to dream, all he has to to is get on a charter headed out to the Gulf of Mexico for some deep sea fishing. Deep Sea Fishing charters offer a variety of big fishing opportunities. There are trolling trips available to catch spanish and king mackerel, cobia, bonita, wahoo, and billfish. Bottom fishing trips are available to catch several varieties of grouper, red snapper, trigger and amberJack.

Why Father’s will love it?
Father’s can spend a whole day out on a charter with their entire families, a good crew and good times catching huge fish. Whether a fishing enthusiast, a lover of the open sea or entirely new to the idea, deep sea fishing is a great experience for dads and the whole family.

Where to find it?
Panama City Beach is lucky to have a high quality selection of Fishing Charters that offer competitive rates. A local favorite you might consider is Hook ‘Em Up Charters with Captain B.J. Burkett. His Hook’em Up is a 31ft. fast diesel-powered sport fishing boat with plenty of fishing room for up to 6 people. Capt. B.J. is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and has plenty of fishing experience to help you catch all the big ones. Call them up at 850-774-8333 or check out the website at Hook ‘Em.

3. Stand Up Paddle Boarding/Surfing Lessons

What is it?
Every dad, no matter the age or size, has imagined himself shredding waves like a pro surfer. Few men, however, own surf boards and hit the beach every time there is a minimal swell. Well, now is the time for you to make your dad’s dreams come true by giving him lessons on stand-up paddle boarding or surfing. Stand-up paddle boarding is actually an ancient form of surfing where you stand on along board and paddle out with outrigger paddles enjoying all the exhilaration of surfing without the need for huge waves.

Why Father’s will love it?
Stand up paddle boarding and surfing are radical ways to get out in the sun and the water with the family. It’s truly a can’t miss great time and father’s won’t forget the experience.

Where to find it?
The best place on Panama City Beach to get lessons on surfing or stand up paddle boarding is through Mr. Surf’s Surf Shop. Located on Thomas Drive, Mr. Surf’s offers a combination of lessons, eco-tours and rentals. For more information call (850) 235-2702 or got to the website http://www.mrsurfs.com.

4. Helicopter Tour

What is it?
Most father’s who’ve lived in Panama City Beach or are frequent visitors may believe they’ve seen every angle of PCB from end to end. While, that may be partly true, we’re willing to bet they haven’t seen it from a few hundred feet up, hovering in a helicopter over the shoreline. If they haven’t, now is the perfect time. Helicopter Tours over Panama City Beach offer amazing views of the “World’s Most Beautiful Beach.” Perfect for taking pictures, romantic adventures or fun for the whole family, helicopter tours make for an awesome father’s day gift idea.

Why Father’s will love it?
Helicopter Tours are totally unique ways to see Panama City Beach. The views are spectacular and you hover just high enough to see it all without feeling detached. I could tell you its a lot of fun, but that would be an understatement. Try it.

Where to find it?
Panhandle Helicopter, just off Front Beach Road, provides air tours over Panama City Beach, Florida. Tours vary depending on the amount of time you’d like to spend in the air, but, either 5 minutes or 20 minutes, you’ll have the absolute best seat on the beach. For more information on tours you can call Panhandle Helicopter at 850-230-2080 or go to the website at http://www.panhandlehelicopter.com

5. Dive Lessons

What is it?
You may not know this, but Panama City Beach is actually North Florida’s most popular place for diving and it is second only to the Florida Keys as the most visited dive destination in the state. Why is it such an amazing dive spot you ask? Well, throughout Panama City Beach there are over 50 artificial reefs, including ships, barges, bridge spans and hundreds of natural limestone reefs, ranging in depths of 18’ to 110’. PCB also has easy access to Morrison and Vortex Springs, two of the most impressive cave and cavern diving locations in the state. All this plus the amazing Empire Mica, a 465ft wrecked ship in the Gulf of Mexico.

Why Father’s will love it?
Because there are just some experiences you can’t get anywhere else. Besides, how cool would it be to say in conversation, “Yeah, I’m a diver. Just last week we hit the S.S. Tarpon, a 220-ft. World War II tug. I do it in my free time.” Every dad wants to be that cool.

Where to find it?
There is no better place for all your diving lessons than the Dive Locker on Panama City Beach. They offer the full range of all-things dive related and can have your dad underwater in no time. Three day Basic Open Water Diver courses are every Friday morning. All the equipment necessary to complete the course, all books and materials, dives and Certification Card are included in the price. For more information call them at 1-888-612-7968 or go to the website http://www.divelocker.net

All you fathers out there have a happy father’s day.

Weather
Do you know the average temperature for Panama City Beach? No? 78°. That’s right, a magnificent 78°, which I’ll bet for some of you is warmer than your summer days. Early spring begins late January where you will find “snowbirds” (winter vacationers) walking the beach, tanning and building sandcastles. Summer temperatures are in full swing by April, warming the gulf enough for water sports and excellent fishing. And the Fall, my personal favorite, keeps the nights a cool 68 – 75° , perfect for seasonal outings and dinner cruises.

9. Ripley’s Believe or Not Museum
Who doesn’t love a good ol’ shrunken head? But after a while even tiny skulls get boring. Panama City Beach’s “Ripley’s” has an added feature that’s sure to liven things up. A 4-D movie zooms you deep into a mine cave and up into space. Its totally fun. What’s even more amazing is that they even have a booth that transforms human beings into hermit crabs. Okay, that last bit wasn’t entirely true…but you’re welcome to believe it anyway…OR NOT!

Club La Vela
If clubs are your thing, there’s no better place to dance and play than the “Largest Club in the US”. Club La Vela has several themed rooms, each with its own atmosphere, ambiance, feel, and audience. You’ll find Hip-Hop, and High-Energy dance fans in the Thunderdome, you’ll see techno-lovers and trendy people in the Underground, Nightgallery, and in Galaxy Club dancing to Break Beats, Progressive House, Chicago Hard House, and Jungle. They even have Live Rock, a Sportszone and a Foam room. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to super-club heaven.

Pompanos Restaurant
Whenever tourists approach a local and ask where they can get fresh, delicious seafood, almost unfailingly, the answer is Pompanos Restaurant. Everything about Pompano’s exudes laid back beach. Located at the entrance to Front Beach Road, from the palm frond ceiling fans to the nautical theme, Pompanos doesn’t miss a beat. Startlingly fresh seafood, skillfully cut sushi and an atmosphere so relaxed and tropical you’ll want to take off your shirt and shoes and kick back. But, please, do remain clothed.

St. Andrews State Park
Perennially on top 10 lists for America’s most beautiful beaches, St. Andrews State Park is absolutely breathtaking. And there’s a great deal more to the park than beach. Vacationers get into nature and enjoy alligator ponds, nature trails, shell island tours, camp grounds and some of the best fishing in town. There are few things better on Panama City Beach then spending an afternoon at St. Andrews State Park, renting a jet ski and a snorkel and truly having an adventure. You’ll see dolphins, alligators, all sorts of marine life…definitely worth being called “World’s Most Beautiful Beach”.

Gulf World Marine Park – Panama City Beach
Have you ever wanted to swim with a dolphin? No, not a rubber-floaty shaped like a dolphin, an actual “Flipper” underwater mammal? Would you like to? If you answered yes, the place for you is Gulf World Marine Park on Panama City Beach. They offer full access to dolphin habitats allowing you to get pulled by a dorsal fin or get a dolphin kiss. They also offer opportunities to be a trainer for a day and learn what its like to take care of these awesome animals. But that’s not all. Not only can you swim with the dolphins, but hang out with sea lions, parrots, alligators, sting rays, sharks, sea turtles, penguins, reptiles and even Elvis. Yep, you heard right, Elvis.

Willy’s Pier Bar a.k.a The Pier Bar at Pineapple Willy’s
Show of hands; how many people like food, music, sports and beach? Good, that’s everyone. P. Willy’s Pier Bar rocks, literally and figuratively. A new addition to the Pineapple Willy’s restaurant, Pier Bar is the ultimate after-hours spot. All the best blues bands, awesome food and drinks and a better view of the beach than you can get on a postcard. Not as rowdy as a club, Pier Bar has just the right blend of laid back and exciting to make for an awesome night out. Pineapple Willy’s Pier Bar also made the top 5 places to watch the game list.

Good food can be found in many places. Great food, however, cannot. You might’ve had a dream once where you thought you had great food. It wasn’t great food. You haven’t enjoyed truly great food until you’ve tasted Firefly’s Espresso-braised Free-range Texas Boar Shank. Firefly is one of the most elegant dining experiences on the beach. The food is upscale, the setting is intimate and you will not find a trendier place for Martini’s. Also try the Ahi Tuna with the soy-lime ginger sauce. You’ll swear off cooking for a week.

Pier Park – Panama City Beach
Panama City Beach’s recent and biggest addition is Pier Park, an outdoor mall and entertainment boardwalk. Tourists and locals alike absolutely love Pier Park. If not for the great stores, then for the state-of-the-art movie theater, or the most unique restaurants in all of NW Florida, or the outdoor amphitheater with live summer shows. It can be any of those things, but my guess is everyone loves it because of the choo-choo train. Who doesn’t love a choo-choo train? Pier Park stands alone complete with festivals, events, rallies and all sorts of cool stuff normal “malls” just don’t have. Not to mention it’s on the beach. Come to PCB and go to Pier Park. If you don’t go to Pier Park you haven’t really vacationed on Panama City Beach.

The Beach
Were you expecting anything else? Panama City’s Beach is the number one reason to vacation on Panama City Beach. Show us an all around better beach that doesn’t require a passport and a vacation guide named Reynard who, for some odd reason, prefers banana hammocks over board shorts. Panama City Beach is without rival in that category. Although world renowned for its Spring Break season, after the students have gone back to school, the beach transforms; gone are all the beer cans and Mardi gras beads and what remains is a quiet, sparkling paradise. PCB has a dedicated Tourist Development Council that puts a lot of money and care into making PCB an enjoyable, relaxing experience for vacationers.
